The Canadian series changed meaningfully from decade to decade in ways that directly affect how collectors research and value coins. Pre-1968 decades contain the silver issues — 80% silver dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars — whose value is tied partly to metal content and partly to numismatic grade and key date. The 1960s mark the transitional decade, with 1967 centennial issues and a mid-series shift away from silver that remains one of the most important compositional dividing lines in the Canadian catalog. Earlier decades often produce antique coins that are genuinely scarce in high grades simply because fewer examples survived in collectible condition. Later decades brought nickel, cupronickel and a growing programme of proof and specimen collector sets.
